A new and broader definition of learning disabilities has arrived on the scene. "Typically, students with learning disabilities demonstrate average or above-average intelligence. However, these students are likely to show specific deficits in thinking processes, such as memory, attention, and perception, as well as difficulties in developing or using strategies to understand or remember what they have read, to listen, to understand directions, to take notes during class, to write sentences and paragraphs, or to organize their time in a way that will enable them to complete assignments."(4)The National Institutes of Health (NIH) defines learning disabilities as: "... disorders that affect the ability to understand or use spoken or written language, do mathematical calculations, coordinate movements, or direct attention."(5) [Next] |
