LOWER MAINLAND SUSTAINABLE POPULATION SOCIETY MISSION--To lower human impact on the planet and in the Lower Mainland.Since human impact on the planet is the product of population X affluence X technology (Paul Ehrlich's equation) we emphasize stopping population growth whereas other environmental organizations stress reducing the other two factors.PURPOSES (these are almost permanent)
P1. To help mankind see that stopping human population growth here and all over the world is necessary to save the planet's web of all life forms, on which humanity depends.
P2. To encourage all nations to control their population so no emigres are produced.
P3. To encourage the first world to curb its extravagance so as to encourage cooperation of developing world in saving the environment.
P4. BL has a prob with this one
To empower women as called for in the Cairo Conference on Population and Development. Lack of equality with men in rights to inherit or to an education works in many ways to increase family size as does lack of roles for women other than as mothers. Women's greater effort in childraising should reduce family size if women are empowered.FOCI (A FOCUS is more changeable than a PURPOSE)
F1. Provide the right to couples throughout the world to have as few children as they wish.
F2. Discourage leaders of various groups from encouraging their members to have more children because it is God's will or to ensure their group's survival.
F3. Encourage governments to advocate a maximum family size of two surviving children. (Lester Brown's idea in Worldwatch).
F4. Reduce immigration to the Lower Mainland to preserve the quality of life here, to prevent increasing impact when moving from developing countries to first world countries, and to discourage countries from generating surplus populations abroad.
F5. Accept immigrants from countries which are working to control their population such as China, Korea, and the State of Kerala in India.
Discourage accepting immigrants from countries that are making very little effort to control their population(examples please!).
F6. BL has prob w this one
Call on governments to fund organizations like INTERNATIONAL PLANNED PARENTHOOD FEDERATION all over the world to help all couples who wish help in postponing or preventing pregnancy. Refuse abortion as a reason for not providing these funds.
F7. Publicly support abstention and all safe means of contraception, including ones such as RU486 to avoid unwanted pregnancies.

Make choice on abortion safe, legal, rare and early by methods in F7. Abortion's divisiveness suggests downplaying F8 at this time.
F9. Support access to abortions, (e.g.) Bubble Zones around Abortion Clinics, freedom from Pro-Life control of Hospital Boards.
F10. Discourage the use of reproductive technology. Deprive people of government help to use such methods. Use defending choice on early abortions as a means of encouraging women's cooperation on this.
F11. Educate and advocate on discouraging population growth in order to save the environment. Articulate reasons why the idea that the world can hold 58 billion people is not feasible.
F12. Stress global climate change as a threat to human survival. This threat worsens as population grows. It is caused by the extravagance of the very rich and makes a lack of options for the poor. It is growth in numbers of poor people that is forecasted.
