Who will protect children from legalized drugs?
an editorial against legalization of drugs
this editorial claims legalization of drugs will
result in increased use of drugs now controlled
by drugs laws. it ignores the fact that most
drug use has dropped including use of alcohol and
tobacco. the author ignores the dutch decrimin-
alizing of cannabis which kept it away from
children. although drug education may result in
              experimentation, harm reduction education with
drug use information will do much to reduce abuse
              and addiction where addiction exists.

Arizona on way to hemp legalization
Tax stamps and licences may pave way for pot
              legalization in Arizona.
Series of 3 articles in Tempe (AZ) New Times
entitled Hemp, Hemp Hooray describes how Arizona
exploited a loophole in the cannabis law and
allowed licences to be purchased for $100 each.
This resulted in pot venders selling marijuana
out of one hemp activisit's van. Recently one
man was arrested for selling pot prior to the
Rose Bowl at the end of January 1996 as a result
of the police's attempt to uphold prohibition of
              pot.

Judge in Belgium Deals Harshly With Teen
Teen caught with pot and acid dies in prison.
A Belgium teen was caught with pot and acid
and given a harsh sentence in Belgium, according
to the source. He supposedly died as a result of
a heart attack while playing ball with hardened
juvenile delinquents in a reform facility. The
author of the article indicates that the teen
should never have been placed in that institution
              - this seems to be more evidence that at times,
the punishment for drug use is too harsh.
The irony, says the author, is politicians who
make the drug policies but drive drunk.

              The Charles Benner Defense

              Benner's defense revolves around ultraviolet
light, melanin, and THC. After hearing his
Scientific Necessity Defense, his lawyer advised
him to plead guilty to one felony charge for
possession (appellate precedent voids this charge
) and one felony he never committed i.e. selling
4 oz of cannabis to two coke dealers. This
latter charge resulted in the coke dealers going
free for their perjury. This is similar to the
Tucker case, where some pot growers had their
charges reduced for falsely claiming the Tuckers
advised them about pot growing (see HIGHER.TXT)

              Marijuana Prohibition promotes Alcohol Use
Evidence shows that pot prohibition increases
              alcohol use.
While both marijuana and alcohol use have waned
among US teengs, the rate is still higher than
normal. As well, US states that prohibit pot
tend to have higher incidents of DUI and deaths
due to alcohol in car accidents. Conversely,
states which have decriminalized pot possession
have less incidents of car accidents in which
alcohol is involved. This can be used as proof
that marijuana legalization could save alot of
              young lives in car accidents.

Censure of British opposition MP Clare Short
demonstrates that politicians are either afraid

about marijuana including its inherent harmless-

be caused by driving it underground.

Marijuana and Driving: the real story (pts 1,2,3)
Marijuana has been found not to be a factor in
              driving.
The main risks involved with marijuana use are
accidents and respiratory illnesses. In most
auto accidents, even when THC was found in the
bodies of drivers, marijuana use was not at fault
              - alcohol was more of a factor than marijuana.
This goes against the myth perpetuated by the
DEA that marijuana increases auto accidents and
the inference that if auto accidents are the
major cause of death among teenage women, that
marijuana use may cause auto accidents.

Why is There a 'War on Drugs?'
              Esssay questions 'war on drugs'
This essay questions the war on drugs and puts
forth the view that perhaps drugs laws are the
cause of drug crime. As well, evidence tends to
show that most so-called harmful controlled
substances are not that dangerous. Also it
questions former PM Mulroney's claim that there
os a growing epidemic of drug abuse. (What
there actually is is a growing epidemic of
police abuses as the 'war on drugs' drags on,
some 15 years after its inception upon the
directive of then First Lady Nancy Reagan,

Drug War Futile - New York Times article
New drug czar not going to win the War on Drugs
Article points out that drug criminalization
only created crime, turned non-whites into
criminals and tied the hands of physicians.
The War on Drugs is futile because each drug
czar's reign included interdiction with less
emphasis on drug education, harm reduction, and
other preventative measures. As well, election

              Marijuana Gateway Drug Myth Exposed
Various excerpts show marijuana is not a
'gateway' for hard drugs such as cocaine and
              heroin.
The Partnership for a Drug-Free America claims
reducing marijuana use would reduce use of more
dangerous drugs. Studies they use to back up
this hypothesis only show that cocaine users have
used marijuana in addition to cocaine. Yet the
majority of marijuana users have never used
cocaine, which makes such anti-drug campaigns
useless and possibly dangerous on the long run.
If Holland is any example, marijuana legalization
may *reduce* exposure to harder drugs.

'Cultural genocide' is a term used by Marc Emery

such as Nazi Germany and the Jews, Yugoslavia,

culture, which can be seen as a form of genocide.

Hatch gets it wrong regarding funds cutting for
interdiction, enforcement and aid to South
America. The government couldn't keep drugs out
during the height of the WOsD prior to budget
cuts. Drug use had increased before the cuts as
well as overdoses. Reduced funding to the DEA
will not affect drug abuse or overdoses. However
it will affect the salaries of DEA agents and

              article documents one criminal psychopath's
murderous crime spree. psychopath is a drug
informant. this is similar to BC case in Prince
George, involving a psychopath who was out on day
parole and escaped from a half way house, only to
murder a man. University psychologist quoted as
saying psychopaths make the best informants.
This article claims the reasons for psychopaths
being let out on the streets is far more sinister
and diabolical. What police can't explain is why
they pay these losers to murder and terrorize
              innocent people.

may give one an idea of why, despite apparent
willingness to consider legalization of marijuana
in the 70's, polticians have done about face and
              precipitated the War on Drugs.

Cannabis less habit forming than tobacco or booze
cannabis is less addicting than tobacco or booze
              Deputy attorney general Richard Kleindienst
said, "Since marijuana is not addictive, we don't
think that our students and young people will
resort to crime in order to get it." Since this
is so, there's no real point in criminalizing
              marijuana. Unfortunately, legal enforcement
agents would rather have us believe pot users
and traffickers are the most deadly people on the
              earth.
One wonders if the recent drug sting in Vancouver

sister, two brothers, and his parents. (This is
similar to the recent case of a Coquitlam man who
murdered his family as a result of drug-induced
psychosis and was released because he served his
              time.)
Licata was a schizophrenic who died 18 years
later. Although he did smoke marijuana, officials
made no reference to this in the records.

Kaplan quote regarding Indian Hemp Drugs

Crime in India couldn't be directly attributable
to marijuana use in Victorian India, despite
evidence regarding fear of heavy users. Clearly
the same fears are raised today regarding
cannabis use in B.C. Also, the Justice Ministry
does not keep statistics on marijuana convictions
              - which points to a possible hidden agenda in
              regard to marijuana in Canada.

              Marijuana's lethality remains unproven, despite
the death of a 23 yr-old Belgium man. Most
reports of human fatalities are unreliable in
the case of marijuana, including the anecdote
about a French person attempting suicide through
              smoking hashish (an urban legend?).
Lethal dose for animals has been established, but
not in man. Oral lethal dose is over 3g/kg of
body weight (monkeys, dogs) though 1g/kg is
lowest record LD in rats. The 3g/kg dose caused
no fatality in dogs or monkeys.

A 50 yr-old farmer from Maine had his 6 year
sentence for marijuana trafficking dropped by
one year. The farmer claims the marijuana for
personal medical use for depression because he
              claimed regular anti-depressants didn't work.
However, the courts let him go to jail as a
warning to other people who might want to grow
marijuana for medical purposes or for personal
use. The basis for the original trafficking
charge was that arresting agents found over 400
plants growing on the farmer's land.

Phil Smith comments on recent JAMA study
The only reason the JAMA study about memory was
carried by most news media outlet was to spread
              misleading information about marijuana.
The news story in DAILYPOT.TXT only contained
half of the report and consequently says more in
what it didn't say. The full report, in the
Journal of American Medical Association, is not
based on scientific methodology that can be
replicated. Thus, it is very weak evidence that
marijuana can impair memory, and implies that
such impairment is permanent which is false.

Recently a Polish author was imprisoned for 15
months for writing and editing a book called
"Soft - Drugs Guide", which describes effects of
              using marijuana, LSD, and hallucinogenic
mushrooms (amanita and psilocybe). The court
claims the book encourages and instructs drug use
their effects and includes less information about
dangers like theory of escalation (gateway theory
), a-motivation syndrome etc. Poland will also
bring in new Drughs Legislation Act which
criminalizes most drug possession. E-mail address

Thread on why hydroponic pot causes hallucination
hydroponic pot seems to have higher content of
              THC.
In the first article, the writer tried some
hydroponic marijuana and had a THC trip. He
spends the next day with a pot-induced hangover.
He wonders if the pot was laced with PCP.
Follow up article: someone in the know replies
that this is typical of THC-induced 'trip' and
              reassures original poster.
Moral of story: don't toke hydroponic pot like
regular weed unless you're aware of the effects.

              Legalizing Drugs: Just Say YES
Legalizing drugs may be the way to help addicts
              and win the drug war.
Only a small percentage of people who have used
drugs (less than 10%) get addicted. Severity of
penalties for drug use play little or no role in
controlling whether or not people prone to drug
use actually use them. Thus potential drug users
are not all that sensitive to the threat of legal
              sanctions.

Illinois man charged with bogus trafficking
              charge.
This article shows how authorities would
exaggerate the amount of sellable pot to make
a conviction stand even though the evidence
shows that the alleged trafficker had grown only
enough marijuana for himself and another person.
Hemp laws thus are broadly interpreted to make
users trafficker by exaggerating the amount of
useable marijuana, and ignoring such factors as
sex of plants and their maturity.

"Legalization is a Surrender" - US DEA PR 9/13/95
Administrator of DEA makes alarmist statements
about legalization and mentions CASA White paper
opposing legalization. He pats himself on the
back for busts on leaders of the Colombian drug
mafia and vows to save American children's future
by continuing the War on Drugs.
It's a good thing the DEA is not silent on
debate about legalization of drugs in America.
How else can we see how ridiculous their
              statements are?
Probitionists forget that their support of the
laws guarantee a very long 'War on Drugs.'

Willie Nelson for the hemp cause and Nelson's

UK cannabis use at an all time high!
quite alot of cannabis was used in 1994.
article says figures of cannabis seizures is
proof of failure of War on Drugs. as well,
the war itself is a waste of tax money.
thus it is clear the laws must be changed, since
the positive social and economic benefits of
              decriminalization far outweigh the negative
              results of continued criminalization.

Hemp bill lobbyists say the issue is one of
