ENVIRONMENT & ORGANIZED CRIME

A News Summary, 1993-1995
by Raven (raven@alternatives.com)

Organized crime is becoming one of the major challenges to the world's environment. Almost every issue of concern to groups like Greenpeace, for example, is affected by organized crime, including:

  1. nuclear weapons proliferation
  2. peace and the arms trade
  3. nuclear power safety
  4. protecting biodiversity
  5. disposal of municipal and hazardous waste
  6. safe use of chemicals, and
  7. enforcement of environmental protection laws.

As governments pass environmental protection laws, new markets arise for those who will break any law for a profit. Organized crime, in many parts of the world, is diversifying into these new markets. If environmental consciousness was the goal of the 1970's and 80's, enforcement is the new batle for the 1990's and beyond.
